Description |
Boat with four oars, "Bindals faering" type, Norwegian. a) Boat, wooden. Each side formed of 5 overlapping lengthwise planks of Norwegian pine. A sixth piece at top edge (wash board strake) has slots to hold oar locks. Bow and stern are similarly shaped (curving up vertically), with bow slightly higher. Boat is natural wood color, varnished, with sections painted white, green and black (fifth plank from bottom painted white with black top edge trim, bottom/keel is green; top edge piece is also green; seats at bow and stern are painted white). Copper rivets hold planks together. b-g) six removable floor panels, each with one or two finger holes (approx. 1" diameter) to aid in removal. Panels of natural varnished wood. See worksheet in accession file for individual measurements and drawings. h-o) 8 oarlocks, of unfinished wood, probably hand carved. Each measures approx. 5 3/4" l x 2" w x 1" d.
